Coast Guard enlisted ratings are specialized career fields. After boot camp, recruits attend "A" School to learn their rating.
Operations Ratings
BM - Boatswain's Mate
Deck and seamanship experts. Operate small boats, navigate, handle cargo, and lead deck crews. The oldest and most traditional Coast Guard rating.
OS - Operations Specialist
Radar and communications specialists. Operate combat information centers, coordinate SAR operations, and manage vessel traffic.
ME - Maritime Enforcement Specialist
Law enforcement professionals. Conduct vessel boardings, port security, and drug interdiction operations.
Engineering Ratings
MK - Machinery Technician
Mechanical experts. Maintain and repair engines, pumps, and mechanical systems aboard cutters and at shore units.
EM - Electrician's Mate
Electrical specialists. Maintain generators, motors, lighting, and power distribution systems.
DC - Damage Controlman
Emergency response experts. Fight fires, repair hull damage, and maintain firefighting equipment.
Aviation Ratings
AMT - Aviation Maintenance Technician
Aircraft mechanics. Maintain helicopter and fixed-wing airframes, engines, and mechanical systems.
AET - Avionics Electrical Technician
Avionics specialists. Maintain aircraft electrical, navigation, and communication systems.
AST - Aviation Survival Technician
Rescue swimmers. The Coast Guard's elite airborne rescuers who deploy from helicopters to save lives.

YN - Yeoman
Administrative specialists. Manage correspondence, records, and office operations.
SK - Storekeeper
Supply and logistics experts. Manage inventory, procurement, and property management.
HS - Health Services Technician
Medical professionals. Provide healthcare services at clinics and aboard cutters.
Technical Ratings
IT - Information Systems Technician
